Get lost in the Alfama, a maze of streets where houses are so close together, you can spread your arms and touch the buildings on both sides of the street! Stroll along the cobblestone pedestrian malls and Lisbon's main street, the Avenida da Liberdade.

Now the city has a new vibrancy, with the opening of a new railway hub and the contrast of brash new modern buildings and restored medieval façades. Get lost in the Alfama, a maze of streets where houses are so close together, you can spread your arms and touch buildings on both sides of the street. Stroll the cobblestone pedestrian malls and Lisbon's main street, the Avenida da Liberdade. Get your portrait done by one of the sidewalk artists. See the new bridge, Ponte Vasco da Gama (built for Expo '98), which spans the Tagus river. Shop for handcrafts. Lisbon remains one of the best places to buy hand-made goods from around the world-embroidery, ceramics, silver, and tiles.

Tour the Jerónimos Monastery, a monastery ordered by Manuel the Fortunate to commemorate Vasco da Gama's voyage to India. The monastery is one of Portugal’s finest examples of Manueline architecture that combines flamboyant Gothic and Moorish influences with elements of the nascent Renaissance. The church features tombs of many of the great figures in Portuguese history, including Vasco da Gama.

Évora is the capital of Alto Alentejo, a Roman city under Julius Caesar (Liberalitas Julia) and one of Portugal's finest and most delightful towns. It is a true open-air museum with a large number of wonderfully preserved monuments and buildings of public interest.

Hit the ruins. One of the grandest cities in Portugal, Évora shows off the country's best-preserved Roman temple as well as an imposing city filled with medieval churches, convents, and palaces.

The Roman Temple of Evora, often referred to as the Temple of Diana, is a remarkably preserved ancient Roman structure situated in the historic city of Évora, Portugal. Constructed in the 1st century CE, it was initially dedicated to Emperor Augustus. Although commonly linked to Diana, the goddess of hunting, this association is actually incorrect.

The Chapel of Bones in Évora, Portugal, is a distinctive and haunting chapel situated beside the Church of St. Francis. Built in the late 16th century by Franciscan monks, its walls are decorated with the bones and skulls of around 5,000 people. These remains were taken from local cemeteries to alleviate overcrowding and to serve as a reminder of the fleeting nature of human existence.

Óbidos is the classic Portuguese fortified town and is one of the most picturesque locations in Portugal. A small town amidst the hills of the Leiria area, Batalha only became a place of significance upon the building of its magnificent monastery, now honored with UNESCO World Heritage status.

Visit the working fishing port of Peniche, the pristine beaches of Lagoa de Obidos and even Europe's largest collection of Buddha statues at the Buddha Eden. Óbidos is a great base from which to explore this enthralling region, and the town is rapidly becoming a popular destination.

Day 6 Lisbon

Portugal's version of the Blues, Fado means "fate" or "destiny," and its songs generally tell the tale of lost love or glory. Head to a Fado house in the Bairro Alto and see the singers swathed in black, accompanied by 12-stringed guitars, crooning their hearts out.

The beautiful university city of Coimbra began as a Roman settlement. It was invaded by Germanic tribes and Moors before becoming the capital of the Kingdom of Portugal in the Middle Ages. As its political importance waned, it quickly grew as a cultural center due to its university, founded in 1290.

Enjoy a Walking Tour through the University of Coimbra, where highlights include: the Porta Pérrea; the Via Latina; the Sala dos Capelos, a portrait gallery of Portuguese kings; and the University Chapel, containing an 18th-century organ, 16th-century candelabra, 17th-century tiles, and a fine Manueline portal.

Day 8 Porto

Take a walking tour of Porto, one of Portugal's most stunning cities. This city is off the coast of Portugal and is known for its colorful buildings. Be sure to look for the blue and white tiled buildings. Not just a bustling seaside city, Porto is also home to botanical gardens. This historic city has extravagant baroque churches with soaring bell towers.

Ascend the Torre dos Clerigos (Clerics' Tower), the tallest structure in Portugal when completed in 1763. As the main feature of the city's skyline, ships used it as a guide when coming into Cais da Ribeira. The top of the tower offers spectacular views of the city.

The Porto Cathedral is the most important religious edifice in the city and has been declared a National Monument. The construction of the Cathedral began during the twelfth century, but it was rebuilt and renovated numerous times throughout the centuries. The temple is predominantly Baroque in style, although its façade and the nave are Romanesque and its cloister and one of the chapels are Gothic in style.
Day 9 Porto
Details: Braga & Guimaraes guided excursion
See Portugal's religious capital at Braga, which erupts during Easter week with enormous colorful processions through the medieval streets. Guimarães is called the birthplace of Portugal; it was here that King Afonso Henriques began his reconquest of the country, leading it to expand to its current borders. The famous castle that dominates the skyline evokes this past, while the university students drinking coffee beneath its shadow guarantee the country a bright future.
